While that sounds good on first glance, as you may run Google Earth now without having to install software or an application first, the new version is limited to Google Chrome currently on the desktop. Now, whenever you click on a location, a Knowledge Card will appear on the right hand side of the screen. Google unveiled a redesigned version of Google Earth today which, unlike its predecessor, is a web application. Getting more information about a certain location is made easier as Google has integrated Knowledge Graph into Google Earth. Just don’t expect any 3D models to pop up on a 2D map. That being said, you can still navigate the 2D maps in 3D mode if you wish by clicking on the 2D/3D circle located on the bottom right corner of the screen. However, zooming in up close to a specific building will reveal that the 3D models used in it are far from perfect.ĭo keep in mind that not all cities have been given the 3D treatment. Some cities around the world have been given a 3D map, allowing you to zoom in and tilt the camera around to get a better view of certain streets and/or structures.įrom a distance, the 3D modelling looks pretty well done considering the amount of detail it has. Available now on both the web browser and on Android devices, with an iOS release coming soon, the new Google Earth brings with it a number of new features that make navigating the digital globe a joy. This, like many other things, will probably change in the future.įor now though, you can only use the new Google Earth if you use Chrome or Android.After teasing it for a week, Google has finally unveiled the new and improved Google Earth. Major downside, apart from the features that it does not support, is that it is Chrome exclusive currently. It is easy to use, and the performance is good as well. The experience that the new Google Earth web application offers is quite good, at least from a usability point of view.
It is fine for some basic searching, browsing, and looking around though. The new Google Earth is not a replacement yet for the classic desktop application. While Google plans to implement many of the missing features in the future, it is unclear whether some features will not make the cut.
